About Biraban Local Aboriginal Land Council

Based in the West Lake Macquarie area, Biraban Local Aboriginal Land Council (Biraban) seeks to build, strengthen and maintain local, regional and state partnerships with government and non-government organisations to contribute to a positive and sustainable future for the local Aboriginal community through employment, housing, Aboriginal culture and heritage conservation, education, training, environmental conservation, community events and economic developments. The organisation holds a large property asset base with future opportunity for strategic utilisation of these assets that will provide sustainable financial and community benefits for Biraban’s members.   

The position

The position of CEO requires a strong business management capability, but first and foremost, a leader who builds and maintains trust with both Biraban’s members, community and broader stakeholder group.  This is a unique opportunity for a committed and progressive leader who is passionate about steering this organisation in the right direction and ensuring the sustainability and growth of the Land Council.

About you

To become the CEO of Biraban you will be able to demonstrate strengths in the following areas:

  • Be naturally engaging, and authentic in your communication and be able to adapt to a diverse audience

  • Experience in generating revenue through avenues such as identifying and successfully obtaining grants, recommending best use or disposal of assets and creating new income streams

  • An ability to improve and ensure a solid base of systems, governance frameworks, procedures and policies are in place, clearly communicated and understood

  • Excellent skills and experience in negotiating with various stakeholders

  • Experience in working successfully with a Board and establishing reporting dashboards, agendas and action plans that maintains transparent communication

  • Skills in financial management of an organisation or business unit

  • A strong knowledge and appreciation of local Aboriginal issues

  • An ability to interpret legislation and build practices that support adherence to legislative requirements with a focus on strong governance

  • Tertiary qualifications in business, or a related discipline


The CEO will be required to operate under the guidelines and legislation of the Aboriginal Land Rights Act 1983 (NSW) and maintain up to date knowledge of how the Act relates to business operations.
